Profile
Russ Richardson began his DJ career in 1991, when he started frequenting many
nightclubs in Leeds, such as Warehouse & The Gallery. He also attended at
events like Phobia, Ark and Kaos. During this time he met a number of people
who were in the industry and before long Russ was ready to embark upon his DJ
career.
A chance meeting led Russ to playing a guest slot on a local radio show
whereupon he met DJ Wisdom (Jay’ Buddy’ Birch) who was running the North’s first
weekly all-nighter in Leeds called U4ria. Russ was invited to play a guest slot
at U4ria, and before long was offered a residency where he played with the likes
of Rob Tissera, DJ Sy, Steve Luigi ,Tony Walker, Stu Allen, Ewan Caewood.
Following this he played guest slots at the legendary Gallery and also played
warm up sets for the legend that is Steve Luigi in Richard Simpson’s absence. He
went on to become one of Leeds finest DJ’s, playing slots at the Exchange Bar as
well as numerous other venues throughout the City.
Russ also began working at The Listening Booth, the very shop where he first
used to buy his tunes from. Whilst there, he worked with Steve, Richard
Simpson and Dean White, from which he gained valuable musical knowledge which
led to jobs at Eastern Bloc and Racks of Wax, before moving to HMV in Leeds
where he worked as a buyer. Throughout this time Russ played various guest
slots in & around Leeds at clubs such as Glasshouse, Casa Locos, and Back to
Mine.
Various music projects followed with a number of releases on white label &
unreleased work with Buckley.
By 2004, Russ took a break from the Leeds Club scene to concentrate on other
projects, but he never lost his passion for DJ’ing.
Fast forward to 2006, when Russ received a call from Leeds Music Entrepreneur
Jay ‘Buddy’ Birch. Russ was offered and accepted a weekly residency at Opus in
Manchester.
In 2007, Russ was offered a weekly residency playing retro house at The Wide
Awake Club, in Leeds. Through this night, Russ met Jay’s business partner and
friend Paddy Connell, which brings us up to the present day and his new
residency at Retro Heaven which sees him playing alongside some of the biggest
house DJ’s from the 90's, such as, Graeme Park, Allister Whitehead, Ian Ossia,
Mark Holliday and K Klass to name but a few.
With more Retro Heaven events on the agenda, the recent launch of the Gallery
Reunion nights not to mention other nights such as Sub Sessions, Russ is now
established as one the North’s finest and most sought after DJ’s on the retro
house scene today.
